About Loom

Loom's mission is to use technology to help knit communities together.

As part of our mission we're developing Loom, a free and open source programmable social platform for building and maintaining communities.

It works in this way:

  1. A deployment of Loom (or an "instance") serves as a central platform for any given community.
  2. Specialized "hubs" containing further specialized "spaces" allow for the creation and management of a common context for online social interactions.
  3. Finally, those "spaces" themselves allow for customized "views" to be programmed, allowing for communities to constantly hone the platform itself to better suit their needs.
This is how we seek to help us connect, by putting the power & control of social networks back into the hands of the people who actually make them what they are.

In pursuit of the mission we also have a set of values we maintain:

We...

  • put people over profits
  • seek sustainability through aligned incentives
  • are intentional about collaboration, community, and governance
  • push for accessibility, inclusivity, and diversity
  • lean towards open source, interoperability, and extensibility
  • distribute power through democratic processes
  • keep things transparent and accountable
  • strive for simplicity and efficiency
  • maintain privacy by default
  • foster a culture of learning and experimentation
